Why it works this way
Every screen recorder I tried wanted an account before it would record a thirty second clip, then uploaded my footage to a server so it could hand me back a link I did not ask for. That is a reasonable design if sharing is the point. It is the wrong design when you just want a file to drop into an editor.
So Recording Studio does the opposite. Capture, compositing, green screen keying, and export all run inside your own browser tab, on your own machine. There is no upload endpoint in the product, because there is no server to upload to. You end up with a video file in your downloads folder and nothing anywhere else.
The tradeoff is real and worth stating plainly: you do not get a shareable link, a cloud library, or transcription. If those matter more to you than privacy, a hosted tool is genuinely the better pick, which is why the comparison pages say so on every one of them.
How the money works
The recorder is free to use, and the free tier is a real one: both formats, 1080p, layout controls, and audio, capped at 5 minute takes with a small watermark. Premium is $9 per month or $79 per year and adds 4K, keying, AI backgrounds, MOV export, unlimited length, and no watermark.
Payments run through Lemon Squeezy as merchant of record, so they handle the card details, the tax, and the receipts. Premium unlocks with a license key you paste into the app, which means there is still no account and no password, even after you pay. The free tools are free with no upsell attached: no signup, no watermark, no file uploads.
